Seaton Community Association is responsible for the day to day running and management of Seaton Community Centre as well as all repairs, upkeep and maintenance.

The centre is very popular and well used by local groups and organisations. The on-going success of the centre is only possible thanks to a small group of dedicated volunteers.

The Community Association are reaching out to the local community to ask for volunteers to help maintain the success of the centre. Your support and involvement can make a significant difference. They are looking for volunteers to assist with all aspects of running the community centre. Any time you can spare to volunteer would be greatly appreciated.

The Parish Council lays 2 poppy wreaths in the village on Remembrance Sunday to remember all those who gave their lives in the line of duty.

One wreath is laid on the seat on the corner opposite the Community Centre, Seaton Village and the other is laid on the seat at the top of Haverley Drive.

Following Remembrance Day the wreaths are re-located and laid on the 2 war graves in St Mary’s Church, Seaham.

Seaton with Slingley Parish Council has signed up and pledged to join the County Durham Single Use Plastics Pledge.

Durham County Council can help get rid of most common pests for a one-off payment of £40.

As the nights draw in, crime rates can go up so here are some tips for staying safe this winter

1   Check all doors and windows are locked and always make it look like someone is home. Put a lamp on a timer or play a radio when your house is not occupied

2   Do not leave car keys or valuables on show. Especially near windows or letterboxes where burglars can reach through.

3   Never leave your car unattended while you defrost it. Do not be tempted to turn on the demister and go back into the house.

4   Be mindful of where you go on dark nights. Avoid dark shortcuts and always park in well-lit places.

5   Only ever get in a licensed taxi. Be sure to check the vehicle plate and driver ID badge before entering.

It’s a crime not to care where your waste items end up. If your item ends up fly-tipped, Durham County Council can trace it back to you. They can then issue a Fixed Penalty Notice of £400 for fly-tipping and regularly prosecute fly-tippers and unlicensed waste carriers through the magistrate’s courts.

Tips to get rid of furniture and white goods legally

• Arrange a council bulky waste collection – book online at www.durham.gov.uk/bulkywaste or call 03000 261 000.

• If items are still in good working condition, donate to a furniture reuse scheme. Visit www.durham.gov.uk/reuse for a scheme near you.

In 2016 Durham County Council carried out a consultation on implementing a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) for dog control.

The purpose of the PSPO is to help protect parks and open spaces against irresponsible dog owners who do not pick up after, or control, their dogs properly. It will help the following:

• reduce dog fouling
• reduce the number of stray dogs and make it easier to return stray dogs to their owners by checking dogs are microchipped
• better control of dogs in public areas
• safer and more welcoming play areas
• improve the local community and environment

Over eighty per cent of people supported the Order, positively agreeing it would: help create safe and welcoming play areas; reduce the number of stray dogs; enable authorised officers to request dogs are put on leads when necessary and tackle dog fouling issues.

Durham County Council has now agreed the PSPO and from 1 June 2017 it will be an offence in County Durham to:

• Allow a dog to foul without picking it up
• Allow a dog to stray – roam loose/wander/exercise without a responsible owner present
• Fail to put a dog on a lead when asked by an authorised officer – Council officer or Durham Police
• Allow dogs in designated fenced off play sites – dogs are not allowed into designated fenced off play sites

Anyone who fails to comply will be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice of £100. This will be reduced to £60 if paid within 10 working days. The maximum fine is £1,000.
